Republic of Tajikistan is a mountainous country in the Central Asian region with more than nine million population, 93% of its territory occupied by mountains, which are considered as some of the highest mountain ranges in the world. The lowest point of the country is located on the height of 300 meters above the sea level and the highest point is located on the height of 7495 meters above the sea level.

Geographically, Tajikistan is divided into three zones: Khatlon Region, which is located in the south-west part of the country, Badakhshan Mountainous Autonomous Region is in the eastern part, including Pamir highlands, and Sogd region is in the northern part of the country. In the northern part of Tajikistan the Fergana valley is located, in the north-west and the central part of the country the Turkistan, Zarafshon, Hissor and Alai mountain ranges are situated, in the south-east there is Pamir (one of the highest points of the Earth – peak of Somoni, 7495 meters); and in the south-west there are Vakhsh and Hissor valleys.

The Republic of Tajikistan in the south borders with Afghanistan, in the east with the People’s Republic of China, in the northeast with Kyrgyz Republic and in the northwest with the Republic of Uzbekistan. Tajikistan cooperates in border-related matters with all neighboring countries.

The total length of the state boundary of the Republic of Tajikistan is 4187.6 km, from which   2898.6 km - river border, 1289.3 km - land border.

On the state boundary of Tajikistan, there are 34 border-crossing points, from which 24 - automobile border-crossing points, 5 – aviation border-crossing points, 4 – railway border-crossing points and 1 – river border-crossing point.

Republic of Tajikistan within the number of projects in border-related matters has close cooperation with UNDP, JICA, IOM, UNODC, European Union, OSCE and other donor countries and partners.
