Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Hungary were established on July 2, 1992.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary to Tajikistan is Andras Baranyi (with residence in Astana).
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Hungary is Ismatullo Nasredinov (with residence in Vienna).
Bilateral relations (exchange of the visits). Since the time of independence, the political relations between the two countries are developing, based on friendship and mutual understanding.
The political visits continuing between the two countries at various levels. In February 2004, the First Deputy Minister, Secretary of State for Political Affairs Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary A. Barsony arrived in Tajikistan on an official visit. During his visit he met with President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon and several other officials.
During the meetings the sides discussed the basic and primary issues of cooperation between Tajikistan and Hungary on the eve of Hungary's accession to the European Union and the implementation of agreements already signed and the signing of new agreements between the two governments.
On January 17, 2011 in Dushanbe have been held for the first time the political consultations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Hungary.
New impetus to the relationship between two countries gave an official visit of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon to Hungary on June 10, 2011. During the visit, the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon met with the President of Hungary, Pal Schmitt. The sides discussed issues of cooperation between the two countries.
After the official meeting, in the presence of the presidents of the two countries the following documents have been signed: the Joint Communiqué of the Republic of Tajikistan with Hungary on further strengthening the bilateral relations, the Agreement on Cooperation in the field of health between the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Health of Hungary, a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries and the Agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hungary on Cooperation in the field of rural development.
On 25 February 2016 in New York there was held a working meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Sirodjidin Aslov with the members of the Steering Committee of the Water Friends Group, including with Deputy State Secretary of Hungary on international cooperation Zoltan Adamand. During the meeting there have been discussed the global water agenda issues, including the issue of promotion of the new initiative by the Republic of Tajikistan on proclamation of the International Decade “Water for Sustainable Development.
On November 28, 2016, inter-ministerial political consultations were held at the level of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan and Hungary in Budapest within the participation of the President of Tajikistan in Budapest Water Summit 2016. During the consultations, the sides discussed topical issues of political cooperation between Tajikistan and Hungary, relations in trade-economic, investment, educational and cultural fields, as well as in other areas of mutual interest. As a result of political consultations, the Foreign Ministers of the two countries Sirodjidin Aslov and Peter Sijjarto signed a Program of Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary for 2017-2021.
On November 29, 2016, in Budapest, in the framework of participation in Budapest Water Summit 2016, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the Nation His Excellency Emomali Rahmon held a useful meeting with the President of Hungary Mr. Janos Ader on the current state and prospects of development of relations between the two countries.
Trade and economic cooperation. The volume of trade between Tajikistan and Hungary in 2015 amounted to 2134,3 thousand USD (export – 3,4 thousand USD; import - 2130,9 thousand USD).
For 9 months of 2016 this indicator reached 4 754,4 thousand USD.
Cooperation with Hungary in the field of health is still under development, but this cooperation is aimed more for sale / purchase of medicines.
Legal basis of the bilateral relation is developing and up to now consists of 8 bilateral agreements.
