Bilateral relations of Tajikistan with Italy
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Italian Republic were established on May 15, 1992.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Italy is Jamoliddin Ubaidullo (with residence in Paris, date of presentation of credentials March 8, 2019).
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Italian Republic to Tajikistan is Agostino Pinna (presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Tajikistan on February 18, 2021).
Political cooperation (exchange of the visits). On May 21-22, 2007 visit of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the Italian Republic senator Gianni Vernetti to Tajikistan has taken place. During this visit, he met with the leadership of the country.
On 2 April, 2009 the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Italy, Senator Alfredo Mantika visited Tajikistan. During his visit the Agreement between the Government of Tajikistan and the Government of Italy on economic, industrial and technical cooperation and the Protocol on cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy have been signed.
On 1 July 2016, the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon received the head of the Italian company “Salini Impregilo S.p.A.” Pietro Salini, which eventually took on construction of Rogun HPP in Tajikistan. A cooperation agreement was signed between Tajikistan and the Italian company for the design, purchase of equipment and construction of the Rogun HPP. The Italian company will be allocated $ 3.9 billion by the Tajik side for the Rogun HPP project implementation.
On December 13, 2019, in Rome in the framework of the International Conference “Italy and Central Asia: Strengthening Mutual Understanding, Cooperation and Partnership” a meeting of Minister of Foreign Affairs Sirojiddin Muhriddin with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy Luigi Di Maio took place. During the meeting, the parties discussed the current situation and prospects for bilateral political, economic, commercial and cultural cooperation, as well as exchanged views on current trends in the region and the world, including security and environmental issues.
On September 4, 2021, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin received the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic Luigi di Maio. During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on the main topics of the bilateral agenda and discussed upcoming political contacts. Special attention was paid to the development of interaction with Italy in the political, trade, economic, humanitarian and security spheres. The interlocutors noted the constructive interaction of Tajikistan and Italy within the framework of international organizations on the main issues of the global agenda. The parties also discussed the situation in Afghanistan and the region and underlined common approach in the fight against terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, transnational crime and other security threats. The ministers of foreign affairs expressed their readiness to continue contacts and consultations of the parties at all levels on topical issues of Tajik-Italian and regional cooperation.
On December 8, 2021, in Tashkent, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin participated in the Second Ministerial Conference "Italy - Central Asia" in the C5 + 1 format. During the conference, issues related to current threats and challenges, including the situation in Afghanistan, topical subjects of regional cooperation in the field of economics and health, as well as prospects for the development of scientific collaboration between Italy and Central Asia were discussed. Within the framework of the conference, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic Luigi Di Maio. During the meeting, the parties discussed the current state and prospects of bilateral cooperation.
Economic cooperation. In 2003 the "Italian Trade Organization" opened its representative office in the Republic of Tajikistan, and started its activity in delivering the equipment and spare parts for cars and trucks.
Joint Tajik-Italian Company “Javoni” operates in Tajikistan and is specialized mainly in the production of finished products from denim, corduroy and light clothing fabrics.
The turnover between the Republic of Tajikistan and Italian Republic:
In 8 months of 2023 – total amount of trade turnover has reached 19241,1 thousand USD (export – 7601,2 thousand USD, import – 11639,9 thousand USD).
Cooperation in the field of security. Over the past years, the strategic partnership between our countries is developing actively in the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking. The Italian Republic was one of the major donors in the creation of the Agency for Drug Control under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan (DCA). Throughout this cooperation were held several meetings between the leadership of DCA and leadership of the Italian police. In the framework of this cooperation special trainings for employees and special purpose units of the analytical center in Italy were organized.
The legal framework. Up to the date 5 legal documents have been signed between two countries.
