Bilateral relations between Tajikistan and Switzerland

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Swiss Confederation were restored on December 9, 1992.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Swiss Confederation is Mr. Sheralizoda Sharaf Ahmadjon. The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in the Swiss Confederation is located in the city of Geneva.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Swiss Confederation to the Republic of Tajikistan is Salman Bal. The residence of the Swiss Embassy is located in the city of Nur-Sultan.

Since 2001, the Swiss Cooperation Office has been operating in Dushanbe. Salome Steib is the director of this office. (since October 2020).

Political cooperation (exchange of visits).

Various instruments of political dialogue, including political consultations, dialogue on human rights, bilateral meetings of official delegations of countries and exchange of official visits, make a valuable contribution to the expansion of friendly cooperation between Tajikistan and Switzerland.

On June 26, 2000, within the framework of the 24th special session of the UN in Geneva, the President of Tajikistan Mr. Emomali Rahmon met with the President of Switzerland Mr. Adolf Ogi.

In December 2001, Minister of  Foreign Affairs T. Nazarov met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland within the framework of the Conference of OSCE Foreign Ministers.

In April 2002 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland visited Tajikistan.

On June 28, 2003, within the framework of the World Economic Forum, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon met with President of Switzerland Pascal Couchepin.

On December 8, 2012, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon visited Geneva and on December 10, 2012 participated in the official ceremony of Tajikistan's accession to the WTO.

On April 26, 2013 the official delegation of the Swiss Confederation headed by the Secretary of State of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland Yves Rossier visited Tajikistan. This trip took place within the framework of a visit to five countries of the Central Asian region in order to identify priority areas for cooperation during the Swiss chairmanship of the OSCE in 2014. During this visit, Mr. Rossi met with the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Emomali Rahmon.

On September 5-7, 2019, a working visit of the Director General of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation Manuel Sager to the Republic of Tajikistan took place. The mentioned official meetings  took place  with the President of the Republic of  Tajikistan E. Rahmon and the Minister of Foreign Affairs S. Mukhriddin.

On November 5-6, 2019, the official visit of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan E. Rahmon to the Swiss Confederation took place. During the trip, official meetings were held with President of Switzerland Uli Maurer, Mayor of Bern Alec von Graffenried, Chairman of the Board of the Swiss National Bank Thomas Jordan, President of the international company Glencore, as well as representatives of the Swiss business and investment circles.

The total volume of foreign trade of the Republic of Tajikistan with the Swiss Confederation in 2022 amounted to 393 mil. US dollars. In 2023 from January to September amounted to 7.3 mil. US dollars  (export - 691 thousand US dollars and import – 6.6 mil. US dollars).

The Joint Intergovernmental Commission for Economic and Trade Cooperation between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Swiss Confederation plays an important role in the development of economic relations between the two countries. To date, three meetings of the Joint Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation have been held between Tajikistan and Switzerland.

Legal framework

The legal framework of the two countries is in the process of formation and it includes 17 intergovernmental and interdepartmental agreements.
