Relations between Tajikistan and Turkiye

The Republic of Turkiye, on January 29, 1992, is one of the first countries that recognized the independence of the Republic of Tajikistan and established diplomatic relations with our country. The Embassy of the Republic of Turkiye in Dushanbe was opened in 1992 and in 1995 the Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan was opened in Ankara.

At present, Mr. Sodiq Imomi (04.01.2025) is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Republic of Turkiye and Mr. Umut Ajar (01.02.2023) is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkiye to the Republic of Tajikistan.

During more than 32 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan visited the Republic of Turkiye 8 times (in May 1996, October 1998, November 1999, October 2002, June 2004, January 2006, March 2009, December 2012) and the President the Republic of Turkiye visited the Republic of Tajikistan 4 times (September 1995, November 2001, May 2009, June 2019) on official and working visits.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan in April 2019, June 2021 and February 2024, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkiye in October 2016, March 2021 and January 2024 visited Dushanbe and Ankara on working and official visits.

It should be noted that political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Turkiye occur on a regular basis. To date, 9 rounds of political consultations have been held. At the same time, both sides conduct consular consultations between the Main Consular Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Consular Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkiye.

In 2024, the foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Tajikistan with the Republic of Turkiye amounted to 445 million 812.8 thousand US dollars, of which 239,079.4 were exports and 206,733.4 were imports. This figure is 22.8% higher than the one in 2023, placing Turkiye as Tajikistan's fourth main export partner.   

The Intergovernmental Commission of Tajikistan and Turkiye on Economic Cooperation plays an important role in the development of economic cooperation between the two countries. To date, 12 meetings of this Commission have been held in Dushanbe and Ankara.

In general, during the period of 2007-2024, more than 285 million US dollars of Turkish capital, including 151.6 million US dollars of direct investment, were attracted to various sectors of the economy of the Republic of Tajikistan, especially in industry, services and trade.

Cultural cooperation between the two countries is deeply rooted in history. Tajikistan and Turkiye have a common cultural heritage, which is closely linked with the name of the great thinker and world personality Mavlono Jaloliddin Balkhi. On this basis, by the initiative of both sides, an international scientific symposium entitled «Mavlono - the link between peoples and civilizations» dedicated to the birthday of this outstanding thinker was held in Dushanbe on October 19-20, 2018.
