Relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran were established on January 9, 1992. The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran was opened on January 9, 1992 in Dushanbe. The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in Tehran was opened on July 18, 1995.

During 30 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries the President of the Republic of Tajikistan visited the Islamic Republic of Iran (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013) and the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Tajikistan (1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2019, 2021).

Visits of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran to Dushanbe in 1991, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2008, 2013, 2017, 2018 and visits of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan to Tehran in 1992, 1994, 2008, 2014, 2019, 2021 were held.

Some 180 agreements, memoranda of understanding and other cooperation documents have been signed between the two countries.

The Tajik-Iranian Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Technical and Cultural Cooperation plays an important role in economic cooperation between the two countries. To date, the Commission has held 14 meetings in Dushanbe and Tehran.

Tajikistan's foreign trade turnover with Iran expected to reach 120 mln somoni in 2021 979.2 thousand US dollars. Of this amount, 82 mln. Exports amounted to 50.3 thousand dollars and 38 mln. 928.9 thousand dollars are imports.

To date, five rounds of consular consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran have been held in Dushanbe and Tehran, the last meeting being held on May 11, 2022 in Dushanbe.

Tajikistan and Iran are two countries with the same language and culture and have common historical and heritage ties.
