Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Portuguese Republic were established on August 4, 1992.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Portuguese Republic to the Republic of Tajikistan is Mrs. Maria Madalena Lobo Carvalho Fischer. She presented her credentials on March 9, 2023 and her residence is in Moscow.
Portugal is a reliable partner of Tajikistan. The foundation for the development of friendly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation was laid during the exchange of bilateral visits at the highest level. In 2002, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Honourable Emomali Rahmon, received the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, Antonio Martins da Cruz. During the conversation, the sides paid special attention to bilateral issues and the situation in the region, especially in Afghanistan. Also in 2009, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic, Luis Amadou, visited Tajikistan and held meetings with the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Honourable Emomali Rahmon, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The meeting discussed bilateral relations, cooperation between the two countries within the framework of the EU Strategy for Central Asia, the situation in Afghanistan and other international issues of common interest.
In 2010, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Honourable Emomali Rahmon, received the Secretary of State of Portugal, Joao Gomes Cravinho, who arrived in Tajikistan to participate in the high-level international conference ‘Water for Life’. During the meeting, the sides discussed issues related to global threats and challenges, including fresh water scarcity in different regions of the world, efficient and rational use of water and energy resources, as well as bilateral relations between Tajikistan and Portugal.
In 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Mukhriddin and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic, Joao Gomes Cravinho, signed a Joint Declaration on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. In the document, the sides stressed the importance of mutual ties within the framework of international organisations and expressed readiness to further strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields.
A legal and contractual basis for cooperation between the states is being formed.
