Diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Norway were established on June 29, 1992.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Kingdom of Norway (with residence in Vienna) is Mr. Kalandar Idibek (from February 13, 2020).
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Norway to the Republic of Tajikistan (with residence in Oslo) is Mr. John Mikal Kvistad.
Political cooperation (exchange of the visits). At the first stage of relations between Tajikistan and Norway, after the establishment of diplomatic relations, a number of high-level meetings and negotiations took place, including between the heads of foreign policy departments, during which the main directions of relations between the two countries were discussed.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway several times visited Tajikistan. The first visit took place in 1999, when Norway was chairing the OSCE, and the second visit took place in 2004.
The Foreign Ministers of Tajikistan and Norway regularly meet at international events.
Interparliamentary relations between the two countries are steadily developing as a tool for bilateral cooperation. The Norwegian delegation of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly visited Tajikistan in 2012.
The foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Tajikistan with the Kingdom of Norway in 2024 amounted to 74,600 thousand USD.
The legal framework is at the stage of formation.
The Parties shall also cooperate within the framework of international organizations.
Humanitarian cooperation. Since Tajikistan's independence, the Government of Norway has provided humanitarian and technical assistance to Tajikistan. It should be noted that the Kingdom of Norway has provided financial assistance to Tajikistan within the framework of OSCE programs for the destruction of small arms and conventional ammunition.
On August 6, 2010 the “Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the “Organization of Norwegian People's Aid” on humanitarian cooperation in the field of mine clearance has been signed. In accordance with the agreement in 2010, the Norwegian side allocated 7 million. kroons (1.06 mln.$) for demining in Tajikistan.
On February 25, 2018, with the support of the Government of Tajikistan, the OSCE and financial support from Norway within the framework of the «Energy Security in the Rasht Valley» project a number of electrical facilities were put into operation.
