Bilateral relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

On January 11, 1992, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia officially recognized the independence of the Republic of Tajikistan. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established on February 22, 1992.

The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in Riyadh was inaugurated in September 2008, while the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Dushanbe commenced its operations in 2010.

At present, His Excellency Mr. Akram Karimi holds the position of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, having assumed office on 31 August 2020. Similarly, His Excellency Mr. Khalid Al Shamrani serves as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the Republic of Tajikistan, having assumed office on 1 January 2026.

The Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon, has undertaken seven official and working visits to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the years 1997, 2001, 2005, 2016, 2017, 2023, and 2024. These visits have played a significant and influential role in advancing bilateral relations. During these visits, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan held meetings with the King and the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as well as with other senior officials of the Kingdom.

Inter-parliamentary cooperation between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia constitutes an important mechanism for the enhancement of bilateral relations. In this regard, from 24 to 26 May 2016, the Chairman of the Majlis Al-Shura of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dr. Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Ibrahim Al-Sheikh, conducted an official visit to the Republic of Tajikistan. In response, the Chairman of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan undertook an official visit to Riyadh on 21 January 2017.

Furthermore, from 26 to 30 June 2024, the inaugural sessions of the Tajikistan–Saudi Arabia Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Committee were convened in Dushanbe. Additionally, from 4 to 5 January 2026, the Chairman of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Idizoda Fayzali, conducted an official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

With regard to high-level political contacts, it is noteworthy to recall the official visit of the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Prince Saud Al-Faisal, to the Republic of Tajikistan in 1992; the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan to Riyadh in 2007; and the official and working visits of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin, to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2014 and 2022.

Furthermore, the official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Excellency Mr. Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, to Dushanbe in 2022 further contributed to the strengthening of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The activities of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Trade, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation are of particular significance for the expansion and deepening of bilateral cooperation. To date, five sessions of the Commission have been convened: the first session on 28–29 August 2013 in Dushanbe; the second session on 1–4 April 2018 in Riyadh; the third session on 23–24 December 2022 in Dushanbe; the fourth session on 26–27 November 2024 in Riyadh; and the fifth session on 14 October 2025 in Dushanbe.

Within the framework of these sessions, a number of cooperation agreements were concluded, and business and economic forums were organized.

Cultural, humanitarian, and educational ties also constitute an important dimension of bilateral cooperation. In this regard, from 5 to 9 May 2018, the Days of Saudi Arabian Culture were observed in the Republic of Tajikistan.
