The state border length of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is 1344, 15 km. From the total length, 1135, 3 km are river border, 189, 85 km are land frontier and 19 km are Lake Boundary.

The border line with Afghanistan mainly passes along the Panj River. The West part of Tajik-Afghan border is situated in lowland and is easily acceptable for transport communication. The East part, starting from Shuroobod and further to the East passes by mountain terrain, the nature of which complicates transport movement. Also the number of motor roads in this area is limited. The main highway in the northern part of the border passes along the Panj River. But from the Afghan (Southern) side along the Panj River are only footpaths and caravan tracks. Generally, there was only one highway, which conducted Tajikistan in the South, in the area of Panji Poyon. All the remaining roads in the region were only access roads to the border villages. From the 2005 to 2012, with the support of Government of Republic of Tajikistan and a number of International organizations were constructed two additional bridges in Shuroobod district of Khatlon region and Vanj district of Badakhshan Mountainous Autonomous Region, with the aim to connect the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

In 2013 there was made amendment to the Intergovernmental agreement between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on state border check-points dated 2005 and was signed in the form of a Protocol on Amendments to the Agreement. As a result, along with existing five state border check-points of international status - “Panji Poyon” in Qumsangir district, “Kokul” in Farkhor district, “Ruzvai” in Darvoz district, “Tem” in Khorugh and “Ishkoshim” in Ishkoshim district, there were opened two other check-points of International status “Shohon” in Shuroobod district and “Khumroghi” in Vanj district. Among the listed, the most significant check-point is Panji Poyon that situated on the South of the country and through which implements the main volume of international transportation.

The issue of delimitation (defining the line of the State Border) and demarcation (setting border signs) of the state border of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is regulated according to the international agreements, which were signed between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (the USSR) and the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan in border sphere. In the present time the State border between the two counties has been defined and guarded by them.

However, in the light of some geographical phenomenon and technical reasons (changing the course of the river, need for renovation of demarcation sings of the state border and etc.), it has become imminent to re-demarcate the state border of Republic of Tajikistan and Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the current issue is under the consideration of the Joint Tajik-Afghan Сommission for re-demarcation of the State border.
