Bilateral relations of Tajikistan with Hungary

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Hungary were established on July 2, 1992. 

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Hungary is Qalandar Idibek (with residence in Vienna).

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary to Tajikistan is Otto Ivan Rona (with residence in Astana).

Political Cooperation

The political relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Hungary are based on the principles of friendship and mutual understanding. Political contacts between the two countries are developing at various levels.

Since 2011, political consultations between the foreign ministries of Tajikistan and Hungary have been established.

The official visit of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, to Hungary on June 10, 2011, gave a new impetus to the relations between the two countries. During this visit, the President of Tajikistan met with the President of Hungary, Pal Schmitt.

On November 29, 2016, in Budapest, on the sidelines of the Budapest Water Summit 2016, a meeting took place between the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, and the President of Hungary, Janos Ader. They discussed the current state and future prospects of bilateral relations.

On April 7, 2021, a working visit of a Hungarian delegation led by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó to Tajikistan took place. During this visit, the third round of political consultations between the two countries' foreign ministries was held, during which a wide range of issues related to bilateral cooperation was discussed.

On February 10, 2022, by the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, an online scientific roundtable was organized to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Hungary.

On October 23, 2023, in Luxembourg, on the sidelines of the Central Asia–European Union Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the Foreign Minister of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, met with the Hungarian Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó. As a result of the meeting, the parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation within the framework of Hungary's Scholarship Program for 2023–2025. This document facilitates the exchange of students and university graduates and offers opportunities for free education at Hungarian universities.

On April 30, 2024, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó visited Dushanbe. During the meeting between the foreign ministers, they discussed the existing mechanisms of bilateral cooperation, including the Tajikistan–Hungary Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation and political consultations. They also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the two countries within the framework of the European Union, which was a key topic of the discussions.

The legal framework for bilateral relations is expanding, and at present, there are more than 18 bilateral agreements in various fields.

Economic Cooperation

An intergovernmental commission on economic and trade cooperation has been established between Tajikistan and Hungary. The first session of this commission was held on October 15, 2021, where the focus was on advancing cooperation in trade, investment, energy, agriculture, education, and tourism. This joint commission plays a crucial role in enhancing economic relations, attracting investment, and facilitating trade processes between the two countries.

On March 1, 2023, a meeting between Tajik and Hungarian entrepreneurs was held in Budapest, with participation from both governments and private sector representatives. The discussions centered on expanding economic and trade cooperation, attracting investments, and executing joint projects in key sectors.

 The Tajik delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, Sharaf Sheralizoda. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of enhancing relations in agriculture, renewable energy, green economy, industry, modern technologies, pharmaceuticals, tourism, large infrastructure projects, and other areas of mutual interest. Opportunities for investment in Tajikistan were also presented, and Hungarian entrepreneurs were invited to establish direct cooperation with Tajik companies, utilizing the existing potential.

In 2024, the total foreign trade volume between Tajikistan and Hungary amounted to 2.2 million USD.
