On 28 March 2019 at the UN Headquarters, New York the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin addressed the High-level Meeting on Climate and Sustainable Development for All.

In his statement, the Foreign Minister of Tajikistan underscored the increasing impact of climate change on the environment and socio-economic development in the country and Central Asia. Minister Muhriddin also stressed that in recent years Tajikistan has witnessed a significant increase in the number of natural disasters.

The Foreign Minister of Tajikistan noted that the widespread use of renewable energy, mainly hydropower, contributes to the economic and social development of the country with the lowest levels of emissions.

He emphasized that over the past decades in Tajikistan there have been recorded a significant shrinking of glaciers, which are the main source of freshwater in the region.

Noting an increase in water consumption in the region due to the demographic growth and shrinking glaciers, Minister Muhriddin further emphasized that countries of the region have to revise their programs and strategies towards more efficient water use and undertake joint measures to promote sustainable management of water resources.

In concluding his address Siroijiddin Muhriddin informed the participants on the results of the High-level event on “Interlinkages between Water and Climate”, which was initiated by the delegation of Tajikistan to the UN on March 27, 2019.
